Diane Curiel

Ms. Curiel brings her years of experience and expertise as a Family Law legal assistant to Childers and Associates. Ms. Curiel began her employment with the firm in November, 2009, as the Legal Assistant in our Criminal Department. Ms. Curiel rapidly became familiar with the legal field and transitioned to our family law department in March, 2011.

Ms. Curiel has a passion for helping clients navigate some of the most difficult times in their lives with dignity and grace. She is compassionate, sharp, understanding, and is an excellent liaison between client and attorney. Ms. Curiel’s background in family law has provided her with extensive knowledge and understanding in matters of domestic violence restraining order, pre- and post-marital agreements, marital dissolutions, legal separations, marital property disputes, child and spousal support litigation, settlement, and trial.

Ms. Curiel is a native of the Imperial Valley, a single mother of two children, and is able to draw upon her own life experience to caringly connect with clients in what can be an emotional time. Ms. Curiel is instrumental in helping clients remain focused on the progression of their cases through the legal system.

Ms. Curiel is a member of the County Legal Professional Association of Imperial County and a member of Western Avenue Baptist Church in Brawley.

Kathleen A. Wilson

Ms. Wilson was born in New York State and raised in Friendship, New York which is in western New York State. Ms. Wilson graduated from Friendship High School with honors in 1975. After finishing school, she married and raised three children who are with families of their own now and she is proud of her six granddaughters.  One granddaughter is attending Wichita State University studying to be a doctor and another attends the University of New York studying to be a paralegal.

In 1992, Ms. Wilson and her two youngest children moved to California after a divorce where they started building a new life. During this period, Ms. Wilson had many wonderful people help her rebuild her life and had many opportunities to learn different types of employment that lead her to the legal field which she has been learning daily since 1999.

In June 1999, Ms. Wilson became employed with the Law Office of William F. Roche. Ms. Wilson was hired as a receptionist, and learned all aspects of the legal field, and worked her way to become a Paralegal in 2002. Ms. Wilson became skilled in issues of child support, child custody, child visitation, dissolution of marriage, and domestic violence actions.

Ms. Wilson has been employed with Childers & Associates since July 2012. She is extremely proud to be a member of the legal team, in which she and her coworkers strive to help people deal with the day to day problems in their lives, assisting families and people of the Imperial Valley.  Ms. Wilson is currently learning preparation of probate accounting for the firm and never stops learning new aspects of programming that will support the firm and clients.

Ms. Wilson has been an active member of the El Centro Elks Lodge for over fifteen years and been a Lodge Trustee for six years. Ms. Wilson’s active membership has allowed her to volunteer for Officer Awareness Night, Hoop Shoot for the youth of Imperial Valley, supporting Boy Scouts Troop, Santa workshop for needy children, and supporting Veterans of America. Ms. Wilson is currently a member of the Legal Secretaries of Imperial Valley and is very proud of her interesting successful life in which she has been able to carve out since her arrival to the Imperial Valley.

Lucia Zepeda

Lucia Zepeda was born in El Centro in 1976 and lived there until age seven when she was moved to Los Angeles for five years. During 7th grade she moved to the Imperial Valley where she continues to reside. Ms. Zepeda attended Heber Junior High School and later graduated from Central Union High School. Ms. Zepeda attended Imperial Valley College and then graduated with a B.S in Criminal Justice degree from San Diego State University with distinctions. Also, graduated from Southern California School of Interpretations receiving a Certificate of Completion of Court Interpreters. During this time Ms. Zepeda was selected with one other student for an internship with the Los Angeles District Attorneys Office.

Ms. Zepeda worked for the Federal State Attorneys Office in San Diego for 7 years becoming well versed in Felonies and Misdemeanors. Her duties consisted of visiting Felony Inmates and office work. Ms. Zepeda is a member of the CJA Panel United States District Court for the Southern District of California as an Interpreter and translator for the past 9 years. She also possess a Bail Solicitor State License and has been a Notary Public for the past 8 years. Currently Ms. Zepeda has joined the Childers & Associates team as an outstanding asset to the civil department dealing with personal injury and bankruptcy.

Ms. Zepeda is a single mother of 4, three boys and a girl. She not only encourages but models the importance of an education and succeeding in their work field through her actions. From the time she became a single parent she has managed to combine her schooling and work with her childrens’ schooling and outdoor activities. She loves her kids to be involved in activities such as sports. Ms. Zepeda developed her responsibility and maturity at a young age, when she had her first child at 14. From there on out she believes that in order to have what she wants in life, she must work for it and doesn’t expect anything from anyone. Her hard work and dedication have molded her into the person she is today.

During her leisure time she loves spending time with her kids and enjoys traveling to learn about new cultures and meet new people. So far she has visited Europe, United Kingdom, Mexico and parts of the United States. To pamper herself she enjoys going out with friends and dancing.  

Lauren Layton

Lauren Layton was born and raised in Holtville, California. She attended Pine School, Holtville Middle School, and graduated from Holtville High School in 2003. She attended and graduated from Imperial Valley College with an AA degree in the arts in 2005. She continued her education at San Diego State University – Imperial Valley Campus where she completed and graduated from the Blended Program for teachers in 2.5 years in 2007. She wasn’t done learning and decided to join her graduating classmates from SDSU and attended and graduated from National University where she received her Masters in Literacy, Reading, and Writing in 2011.

Lauren takes pride in her work and acquiring as many skills possible. While a full time student at IVC she worked part time as an administrative assistant for Keithly-Williams Seeds. Where she managed travel arrangements, filed, and perfected her computer skills. After graduating from SDSU, she was hired by Holtville Unified School District as a teacher where she continued to teach grades 3rd and 4th grade for 9 years. She knew her way around a classroom and how to reach students to help them excel in their learning, but this wasn’t enough.

She began interning at the District Attorney’s office as a clerk, which turned into assisting attorneys in court. The fascination with this process resulted in her enrolling in California Desert Trial Academy Night Law School in Indio, California. In conjunction, she was hired as a full time clerk with the DA’s office. She learned valuable skills and worked mostly with Criminal Misdemeanors. She developed an understanding of the court process and legal system.

She was added to the Childers & Associates team in October 2016. She does a little of everything from answering phones, meeting with clients, working with Personal Injury cases, assisting in Criminal Law cases, drafting Trusts, managing Estates, Hour and Wage cases, and Juvenile Dependency. She has currently become a Notary Public as well. 

During her leisure time Lauren likes to do kickboxing, yoga and run for fitness. She enjoys quality time with her family in the desert, at home, or at dinner. Her true passion is traveling. She has been the Italy, Mexico, Canada, Thailand, Hawaii, the East coast, Florida, Idaho, Texas, and California. She also enjoys participating in events for a “cause.” She ran the San Diego Rock N’ Roll Marathon in 2015 to raise money for cancer and hopes to participate in more in the future.

Nehemias “Nemo” Fernandez

Nehemias “Nemo” Fernandez joined the team of Childers and Associates in September 2017. He is fluent in Spanish and brings a varied background from the various fields he has worked in. He brings twenty-five (25) years of experience in banking operations, ten (10) years experience in tech support and is a Notary. His experience in the legal field comes from his work with legal field with the Law office of Ann Marie Zimmerman where he worked for 5 years in the areas of estate planning and probate.

Nemo was born in Mexico, grew up in San Diego area where he graduated from high school in 1974. He has two grown children, a daughter who is an educator and a son who works in the IT field. Two years ago, he married the love of his life, a local music teacher.

On his free time his personal interests are biblical history, music, technology, and cycling. Nemo has completed the Rosarito-Ensenada bike run several times, most recently in 2013.
